#2 Consistency Trumps Motivation

Monthly inspiration on self-leadership for insight professionals

I get knocked down, but I get up again

It’s a reality of leadership, agency life and life in general that we will have knocks. And I know it’s been a tough start to the year for many agencies. I am sure the England team can relate!

One of the big things that takes a hit in times of adversity is motivation and if you’re a cheerleading optimist like me, feeling demotivated is an uncomfortable place to be. As a leader it comes with big feelings… are we doing enough? is this working? what does everyone think of me?

Showing up, for yourself and your team is a key leadership skill, so in this month’s newsletter I am thinking about how you show up, come rain or shine.

We THINK we can control our motivation

This is a myth.

We all have times when we’re feeling like we can take on the most ambitious projects and solve the knottiest problems and times when trying to do the simplest task feels a huge weight. Instead, focus on what you can control.

Consistency beats motivation, every time.

Being consistent FEELS boring

It runs contrary to the prevailing narrative, where we are told to be agile, flexible and innovative. But when it comes to building a skill, growing our confidence and making an impact, consistency is key.

DO things consistently and it will generate results

Start Small: It’s hard to do big things consistently. At some point, your motivation and capacity will dip and you need the thing to be manageable enough to keep doing it.

Play the Long Game: Consistent 121s and client catch ups are the kind of things that regularly get bumped, but building relationships is critical for sustainable solid performance.

Get started by asking yourself or your team:

  • Where do you see me being consistent and what’s the impact of this?

  • What, if I did it consistently, would have the biggest impact?

  • What’s your MVP? What’s the minimum amount you need to do to keep up X habit and when will you do it?

Because how you talk to yourself matters

What stops you being consistent? What would be the simplest thing you could do to address that?
